Do Australians need a visa for Nepal?

Yes, but it’s straightforward to obtain. Australian citizens can get a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, or apply for the equivalent e-visa online here in advance — both cost the same and grant the same entry rights. There’s no need to visit an embassy or consulate ahead of time unless you’d prefer to.

    As of 2026, Nepal’s tourist visa fees for Australians are:
    • US$30 for a 15-day visa
    • US$50 for a 30-day visa
    • US$125 for a 90-day visa
    Children under 10 are exempt from the fee. Fees are generally paid in USD cash on arrival, so it’s worth carrying the right notes rather than assuming a card machine will be available. Visa fees are reviewed periodically, so it’s always worth double-checking the current rate shortly before you travel via the Department of Immigration or the Nepal Embassy in Canberra.

    What you’ll need

    Applying for the e-visa a few days before you fly can save you time in the arrivals queue at Kathmandu airport, particularly during the busy autumn and spring trekking seasons when several international flights often land within the same hour.

    Extending your stay

    If your plans change once you’re in Nepal, tourist visas can generally be extended through the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or the Pokhara Immigration Office, up to a maximum stay of 150 days within a single visa year. This is worth knowing if you’re planning to combine your trek with extra time exploring Kathmandu, Pokhara, or elsewhere in the region.
