Outside business hours, or if you’re back in Australia trying to reach someone on your behalf, calls divert to the 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre in Canberra: +61 2 6261 3305 (from overseas) or 1300 555 135 (within Australia).
What consular assistance can — and can’t — do
The embassy can help with a lost or stolen passport (issuing emergency travel documents), genuine medical emergencies, and support in serious situations like an arrest, a missing person, or a death overseas. What it won’t do is pay your medical bills, get you out of trouble with local law, or act as your travel insurer.
That last point matters: travel insurance with high-altitude and evacuation cover is still essential. The embassy is a safety net for genuine emergencies, not a substitute for insurance.
